Steiff Jonathan Edwards Bear
Size: 11.81 inches (seated - 8")
- Sometimes referred to as the "outhouse" bear -
an extremely popular President of the United States, Teddy Roosevelt
was always receiving gifts from his ardent supporters. One that was most
unusual, even for the outdoorsman, was a live bear cub. His children
were terribly excited, but Roosevelt insisted that the bear either be
released into the wild or sent off to a zoo.
Remarkably, while Teddy
was involved with all his Presidential duties, his children smuggled
the bear off to an outbuilding on the White House grounds. After every
meal they would quietly smuggle table scraps and assorted leftovers out
to the bear. They even gave the bear a name, "Jonathan Edwards". Living
quite happily in the building, and obviously very well fed, the bear
grew larger, fatter and noisier. Eventually Roosevelt heard noises from
the outbuilding and went to investigate. Imagine his surprise. Despite
the pleas of his children, Jonathan Edwards was sent off to a new home
in the zoo."
